- The weird slang. Such as, "We are going to dinner for 7:30," or "I been knowin' her since I was in kindergarten," "We was cuttin' up last night," and lastly, calling a back pack a "booksack". Those aren't all the weird sayins, just a few off the top of my head. Crazy cajuns.
- Mardi Gras. Most people just think of New Orleans when they think of Mardi Gras, but it is a huge statewide thing. When I moved here, people asked me if we celebrated Mardi Gras in Kansas. I was thinking yeah, we go out to the bars on Fat Tuesday and wear lots of beads...so yeah, we celebrate Mardi Gras. Wrong! Mardi Gras is a month and a half long celebration all across Louisiana, beginning immediately after New Years. Houses are decorated in green, gold and purple, banners are hung at the house of every person whom has been a krewe king and queen since 1960 (and believe me, there are a lot of krewes,) there are Mardi Gras balls and celebrations almost every weekend, and finally, the week of Mardi Gras....is crazy. There are parades on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and then finally the big parade on Fat Tuesday. In addition, students are given 4 days off of school for the holiday (in addition to Spring Break,) most businesses are closed, and families tailgate along the parade route for days. And this happens in every single town in the state.
- Poverty. Louisiana is definitely a blue collar state. I thought Kansas was blue collar, but it compares in no way with Louisiana. I would guess that 60% of the state is supported by the government in one way or another.
- They really like to sue each other. I think this follows in direct proportion with #3.
- And lastly, my gym is weird. This is really why I started the whole post, but I thought of everything else along the way. The owner is a fat slob of a man who drives a tricked out white Hummer with "LA Fitness" plastered alllllll over it. I am assuming he writes it off as a business vehicle. And I see strange things at the gym, which is weird, because it is a really popular place. For instance, in the past two days, I have seen a woman running on the treadmill drinking coffee, men working out in jeans and button up shirts, and girls wearing HEELS while working out.

WTF?
Louisiana is weird. I love living in the south, the warmer weather, the southern hospitality, and the great food...but sometimes, I just think "WTF?"

Ahh, the south...I swear, it's a different world down there. I was so confused the first few times I went down to Atlanta to visit my parents :) We just got back from NOLA last night - I don't think that I had ANY idea that it was going to be so Mardi Gras-tastic already. Bourbon Street was just insane - I can't even imagine being there on Fat Tuesday...
Ah, yes...it really is a whole different world and culture. Sometimes I think Louisiana could be its own country. After tomorrow I am going to post pictures of the "real" Mardi Gras (aka, how the coonasses do it!)
My boyfriend was born and raised in New Orleans so I get to hear all the little "things" along with the funny little accent on certain words. I think my favorite is "Your mom 'n them," like he'll say "Are we going to go hang out with your mom 'n them?"
